The Phases of Rehabilitation: From Injury to Prevention
Rehabilitation is not just about getting rid of pain — it’s about helping you return to sport safely, confidently, and stronger than before.
At Hoops Physio, this is led by our team who have extensive experience in basketball and performance-based rehabilitation. We follow a clear, structured rehab pathway so you understand what you’re working on, why it matters, and what comes next — all within an elite training environment designed for return-to-sport rehab.
Phase 1: Settle the Injury
Goal: Reduce pain and swelling while protecting the injured area.
Early rehab focuses on calming symptoms, modifying load, and keeping you moving safely. This may include gentle exercises, education on what to avoid, and maintaining fitness where possible.
➡️ Pain settling does not mean rehab is finished.
Phase 2: Restore Movement & Control
Goal: Regain normal movement and basic strength.
Once symptoms improve, we work on restoring joint mobility, balance, and muscle control. These foundations are essential for everyday movement and basketball skills.
Phase 3: Build Strength & Capacity
Goal: Prepare your body to handle higher loads.
This phase builds strength and tolerance so your body can absorb force. It often feels more like training again — but it’s a critical step before returning to sport.
Skipping this phase is one of the biggest reasons injuries return.
Phase 4: Return to Basketball Movements
Goal: Reintroduce running, jumping, and change of direction.
Using our elite rehab and performance facility, we gradually add basketball-specific movements at increasing speed and intensity. This includes controlled court-based drills, strength and power progressions, and conditioning work that reflects real game demands.
Our physio team closely monitors movement quality, fatigue, and confidence to ensure you’re progressing safely.
Phase 5: Return to Training & Play
Goal: Safely rejoin training and competition.
Return to play is a process, not a single clearance. We assess strength, movement, conditioning, and readiness to ensure you’re prepared for real game demands.
Phase 6: Prevention & Long-Term Performance
Goal: Stay healthy and perform consistently.
Rehab doesn’t stop once you’re back on court. Ongoing strength work, smart load management, and recovery strategies help reduce future injury risk and support long-term basketball performance.
Why This Matters
Working with a sports-focused physiotherapy team in a high-performance environment allows rehab to be more precise, progressive, and basketball-specific.
Each phase builds on the one before it. Rushing or skipping steps increases the risk of re-injury and ongoing issues.
At Hoops Physio, our goal is not just to get you back playing — it’s to keep you playing, using expert sports physiotherapy and elite facilities to support every stage of your rehab and long-term performance.
🏀 Sport-specific rehab = Long-term results.
